On why ‘read’ rhymes with two different words, and what English would sound like if it didn’t
If you’ve studied Spanish or Italian, you know their vowels behave themselves: A is always roughly ‘ah,’ E is ‘eh,’ I is ‘ee.’ English used to work the same way. Then, over roughly two and a half centuries starting around 1350, every single long vowel in English climbed upward in the mouth or, once it hit the top, buckled into a diphthong. Linguists call it the Great Vowel Shift, a term coined by the Danish linguist Otto Jespersen, and it’s the reason English spelling looks like it’s lying to you.
The timing is what made it permanent. William Caxton brought the printing press to England in 1476, right in the middle of the shift, and printers needed fixed, consistent spellings to typeset from. So the spelling froze at a point when ‘name’ was still said closer to ‘nahm,’ ‘time’ closer to ‘teem,’ and ‘house’ closer to ‘hoos,’ while the pronunciation kept moving underneath it. Spelling stopped; sound didn’t. Every mismatch you’ve ever had to explain to a student, why ‘read’ is pronounced two different ways depending on tense, why ‘though,’ ‘through,’ ‘tough,’ ‘cough,’ and ‘bough’ don’t rhyme despite looking like they should, traces back to this one badly timed coincidence.
So: what if it hadn’t happened? What if English pronunciation had stayed where the spelling still says it is?
The most immediate effect is that English spelling would almost certainly be phonetic today, in the way Spanish and Italian still are. Caxton’s frozen spelling would have kept matching a pronunciation that never moved away from it. A student learning English wouldn’t need to memorise that ‘ea’ makes five different sounds depending on the word; there’d just be one sound, roughly stable, the way there is in most other European languages. Modern English’s single biggest teaching obstacle for beginners, the total disconnect between letters and sounds, simply wouldn’t exist.
The pronunciation itself would sound, to modern ears, closer to Italian or church Latin than to anything currently called English: ‘time’ rhyming with ‘team,’ ‘house’ rhyming with ‘goose,’ ‘name’ landing closer to ‘nahm’ than ‘naym.’ The obvious assumption is that this would make English sound more like its close Germanic cousins, German and Dutch. It wouldn’t, not straightforwardly. German independently shifted its own long vowels along a similar path around the same period (long ‘iː’ became ‘aɪ,’ giving ‘Eis’; long ‘uː’ became ‘aʊ,’ giving ‘Haus’), and Dutch shifted differently again. All three languages started from the same continental vowel values and each drifted away from them on its own schedule. An unshifted English wouldn’t have converged with modern German or Dutch; it would just sound unfamiliar to all three, a kind of vowel system none of the three current languages actually uses anymore.
None of this changes what to do in a lesson on Thursday. But it’s a useful thing to say to a frustrated student staring at ‘colonel’ or ‘island’: the chaos isn’t random, and it isn’t your fault for not seeing the pattern. It’s a printing press that arrived about a century too early, catching English’s vowels mid-sentence and never letting them finish.
