About Ian Springham
Ian was born in the city of Westminster, a few hundred metres from Trafalgar Square, just as the “Summer of Love” fizzled out into the “Autumn of Guile.” Coming from a mixed-heritage background – British, German, Irish, Dutch – Ian had an early ear for languages and had mastered Melanesian by the age of ten. He knew nobody else who could also Tok-Pisin and so reverted to his mother tongue. Growing up with a lisp, stutter, and stammer, it was only extensive speech therapy and watching black & white movies that helped Ian to overcome challenging pronunciation problems, giving him the Stewart Grainger voice that he has, even unto this day.
Secondary schooling brought out Ian’s natural linguistic gifts, getting an A for English Language. It was at this point that Ian sought to achieve mastery over grammar and vocabulary, the two other measurables in language acquisition. Vocab was not a problem; as Ian was an avid reader, he devoured the contents of dictionaries, glossaries, gazetteers, thesauri, telephone directories, newspapers, matchboxes, and almost anything else with print upon it. Grammar proved marginally more difficult, as it was no longer taught in schools. Ian sought out ancient pre-war textbooks to bring elucidation onto the matter. This proved somewhat fruitless, as the grammar therein was pertaining to a style of English no longer used. Back to the monochrome films … and thence to grammatical analysis of the English language. At the age of nineteen, Ian produced one of the first and most comprehensive computer programmes to produce syntactically correct sentences in the English language. Its finest output was: “Now the medieval orbs are to be raised.” Ian realised then that he had to teach this stuff …
Fast forward two decades. After many years of working in the IT and charitable fields, Ian met Sarah. They fell in love and got married. One of the few pieces of Sarah’s multiplicities of sage advice stuck in his mind: “You should teach English as a Foreign/Second Language. You’ll be good at it.” Eventually, Ian settled down and set about raising the funding for his teacher training course. The course was a great success, with Ian attaining 4 A grades and a B. He became an English Language Teacher, first in London and then in Gozo, Malta.
Ian now teaches a mixture of General and Business English in the morning, with fluency classes in the afternoon. He also helps learners to achieve their best results in English examinations, for General, Academic, and Business purposes. Being something of a specialist, Ian also offers courses in English for Aviation and Medical staff, Footballers, and many other professionals for general and more specific purposes.
